Christmas
Christmas Break is right around the corner. I can't believe how time has flown. I have got our Christmas tree decorated in the classroom. I love the candy cane decorations we made in class! They are really cute!
Be sure to look at our classroom calendar. There are lots of items that we are doing this week.

Blending Words
Reading Rockets has some great ideas on how to help your child blend and segment words. I sent some activities home already that can help, but here are some other ideas that might be better suited for your child. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss your child's progress.

Rocks
We have completed a fun project! The class is studying all about earth materials, such as rocks and water. We have looked at rocks this week. We compared and observed rocks using size, shape, color, uses, and texture. For an art project, the class made pet rocks. I think they turned out pretty darn cute. What do you think?

Election Day
Election Day is November 4th. We are going to have a mock election in class, so that the class better understands the concept of voting. We have already made voter registration cards, so I will expand on this subject. If you would like to share your voting experience with your child, please do so. This will allow he or she to better grasp the concept.

Report Cards
Do not be discouraged by your child's report card. If your child scored a three on most items, it was because these items will be ongoing throughout the year. A three in my classroom means that your child understands the subject and has shown that he or she can master the topic. However, if I provided a four in that subject, where would the room be for your child to grow and improve? I hold my students to not just kindergarten standards, but to first grade standards. I want my class to be able to succeed in everything that they do. So, I can not just accept the best in subject areas. I want excellence. I want to be able to say that your child has gone above and beyond. Please understand that I am just like you all. I want what is best for your child, so I will continue to push them forward towards success.

Fire Education Day
Fire education day was awesome. The kids got to learn a lot about fire safety. They even got to take a picture with the truck. The pictures are located on the website listed below. They had a blast, and I loved getting to share this experience with them.
Please remember that tomorrow is Picture Day. These pictures are for the yearbook and not for our class picture.

First Week
Our first week was a little hectic. We spent more time learning about one another than anything else. I was able to get to know each student's personality, and I believe that will help me in understanding their learning styles. We will be spending next week doing much of the same thing. We will focus on rules and procedures within the classroom, so that the students will better understand how to conduct themselves while performing in centers or stations.

Parents
This week has been about getting to know one another and classroom procedures/rules. It has been a long summer for these kiddos. It will take a while for your child to understand the classroom rules and the expectations that I have for everyone. If your child states that I was "mean" that day, I am truly not trying to be "mean". I have to model and correct behavior in the classroom, so that everyone knows what I expect from them. So do not panic! I am not trying to single one child out or any child in particular, but we have to follow classroom rules for everyone's safety and to ensure that all students are learning. It will take a little time for everyone to bounce back from summer, and to get into the routine of things again. Please bear with me while we make the transition. All I want is your child to succeed in every way possible.
